Dr Mel Kurtulus of San Diego Women’s Health has been bestowed the 2009 Patient’s Choice Award, making this the second year in a row to receive this honor.

What is the highly coveted Patients’ Choice Award? It’s an honor that reflects the difference a doctor made in people’s lives through the exceptionally high praise granted to a doctor by patients. Every month, more than 40,000 patients across the U.S. provide online feedback about their experiences with their doctors. They rate various components such as bedside manner, doctor-patient face time, degree of follow-up, courtesy of office staff, and overall opinions. While physicians generally receive positive reviews from their patients, only a select few receive uniformly rave reviews across the board. Of the nation’s 720,000 active physicians, less than 5% were accorded this honor by their patients in 2009.

Dr. Kurtulus, along with a select number of physicians nationwide, was selected based on information gathered from over 800,000 reviews and ratings of patients across the nation. Dr. Kurtulus was also the recipient of the 2008 Patients’ Choice Award.

Dr Kurtulus and the staff at San Diego Women’s health want to thank our patients for their continued support, making us a valued member of the greater San Diego community.

SCRIPPS SURGEON FIRST IN SAN DIEGO TO PERFORM SINGLE-SITE ROBOTIC HYSTERECTOMY
Scripps Memorial Hospital – La Jolla recently became the first hospital in San Diego and one of the first in the country to perform a hysterectomy using single site robotic technology.

Mel Kurtulus M.D., a La Jolla gynecologists and surgeon, led the surgical team that performed the hysterectomy performed from a 1-inch incision at the belly button. The single site technology allows the procedure to be performed using a single incision virtually hidden in the patients navel.

Recently approved by the FDA, this revolutionary surgery not only offers the benefits of robotic surgery such as less scaring, less bleeding, less pain, fast recovery and a shorter hospital stay than with conventional laparoscopic surgeries but it is also a virtually scarless surgery performed from just a small incision hidden in the belly button.

“With the addition of single site surgery, Scripps Memorial continues to lead in the evolution of surgical technologies” says Kurtulus. “We’re thrilled to be the first to offer our patients the most technically advanced surgical options available to address women’s health issues.”

 Patient Testimonials:

Am I royalty? 'No', but one would think so by the way Dr. Mel Kurtulus and his staff at San Diego Women's Health (Bethany, Office Mgr & Nurse Cindy) treated me. . . like royalty. I was experiencing lower pelvic pain/unexplained bleeding between menstrual cycles. So after a series of tests, I was referred to Dr. Kurtulus. Feeling a little control-freaky, I did some cyber research on him. Come to find out that his credentials are exceptional! He is highly-rated by patients, was given numerous awards and teaches the medical students & residents at UCSD. Impressive! Being an internal auditor is a part of my duties at the company I work at. So it's second nature for me to get into that observant mode. When I first entered his office, I thought I had made a mistake because it looks like an artistic, contemporary, model home! It was like no other doctor's office I had ever been too; with modern furniture/fixtures and black/white pictures that he had taken himself. Like his office, he is like no other OB/GYN. During the initial consult, Dr. K asked me a series of questions and he diligently wrote tons of notes. To find out the cause of my symptoms, I had to go through a couple of more tests to rule out cancer. Whew! I didn't have the Big C! However, after he did an ultrasound, it was discovered I had fibroids in my uterine wall & cysts on my ovaries. Ugg. Dr. Kurtulus advised that a partial hysterectomy & removal of cysts would alleviate any future problems. I agreed to the surgery & he discussed the surgical procedure using the DaVinci Robotics (Talk about thee state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgery!). I only had 4 tiny incisions on my abdomen (one was in my belly button). I was up & walking that night with minimal discomfort. The nursing staff in 4East/4West at Scripps Memorial gave me the royal treatment as well. Within 2 weeks, I was walking the Smithsonian in Washington, DC! Impressive!

The best minimally invasive doctor in San Diego! I had a condition called adenomyosis with additional fibroids within the uterine walls. I was told It was about the size of a 20 week pregnancy. I went to 5 doctors searching for one that could do it without cutting across the abdominal wall (similar to a C-section). None of them would do it - not even Homer Chin, Director of the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology @ UCSD. Then I found Dr. Mel Kurtulus. His bedside manner was wonderful and his staff is incredible. We encountered a few obstacles prior to surgery - low iron levels and bleeding, which he addressed and corrected within a month. He was able to get a surgery date quickly & the robotic hysterectomy went off without a hitch. Prior to the surgery he did state that if there were any complications or the uterus was too big he may have to resort to an abdominal removal. The uterus was the size of a volleyball, yet he was still able to finesse the beast out with the robot. Amazing!! I was told I was able to leave that day, but I made the personal decision to stay overnight. I was walking that night and cruising the floor of the hospital passing time until I was able to be discharged. I left the next morning with the doctor's blessing and I felt great! (a bit achy, but great) I only had 4 tiny incisions and one of them was inside my belly button and virtually invisible! I would recommend Dr. Kurtulus to anyone needing or entertaining a gynecological surgery. The time spent in the hospital was reduced (and thus the cost of staying over) and healing was SO much faster than any other method I had researched. Within two weeks I was back to hiking Iron mountain)

– Carole

Dr. Kurtulus is great, and robotic surgery is amazing. I went from severe, continuous pain to no pain. I had only minor soreness from the surgery. The short hospital stay was pleasant, and I was ready and able to be home on my own the next morning. Four days later I drove myself to a 4th of July BBQ, and in less than a week I was walking farther than I have walked in years. After a week, I was back working out with my personal trainer. I feel so much better, I can't believe that anyone wouldn't want this surgery. I just had my two week follow-up appointment and it went great... don't tell anyone, but I went ballroom dancing last night. - S. Summers

 – S. Summers

Dr. Kurturlus has chosen an amazing staff who also took great care of me with every pre-op & post-op visit. Bethany & Cindy are always friendly & professional. Everything is organized & thoroughly documented. They made sure everything was in order for my surgery to be approved! (Got to love those HMO's right? Uh 'No-no'). Love these Ladies! Impressive!

I sought out Dr. Kurtulus for treatment of uterine fibroids. He was understanding and respectful of my desire to preserve my fertility and recommended minimally invasive surgery. He recently was successful at removing several fibroids from my uterus with the DaVinci Robot. In just a few days after the robotic surgery, I was able to perform normal activites with few restrictions and was able to return to work within a week. I have had a traditional abdominal myomectomy in the past and was pleased at how much less pain and recovery is associated with the robotic myomectomy. I highly recommend Dr. Kurtulus for minimally invasive surgery. He is extremely knowledgable and thorough and both he and his staff are friendly, courteous and professional.

– LM

I highly recommend Dr. Mel Kurtulus for robotic myomectomy. I have had the traditional abdominal myomectomies in the past for fibroid removal and was out of work for over a month. This time I researched the robotic surgery and came across Dr. Kurtulus. After having the robotic surgery recently, I was back to work in less than a week! The quick recovery time is amazing and I will be able to conceive within just a few months. Dr. Kurtulus is very knowledgable and both he and his staff are professional and courteous.

– Lorie

I highly recommend Dr. Kurtulus. As far as these kind of appointments go there is usually a crowded waiting room and very long wait. I was seen by the doctor within 5 minutes of arriving. The office is wonderful, very nice and helpful. Dr. Kurtulus is so nice and professional, I was very impressed. As it turned out I needed surgery and he was amazing. I had a hysterectomy and did not need to say the night in a the hospital. I just had my 2 week post op visit and I am doing very well.If you need a great women's doctor you can't do better than Dr. Kurtulus.

– Melinda

Dr. Kurtulus is an advocate for women's health and offers minimally invasive surgery procedures to reduce the risk of infections, post surgery down-time, and pain. He takes care to schedule patients within a generous time-frame. thus giving patients adequate time to process information and ask questions.

– Karen

I recommend Dr. Kurtulus for his excellent skill in minimally invasive surgery. i had a huge fibroid that he removed using the da vinci robot. i was moving around the same day of surgery with minimal pain and tiny incisions. i had been to other doctors before him and they either said open surgery or hysterectomy. i am happy that i came across him and it was all done without any problem.

– Ruhi

I whole-heartedly recommend Dr. Kurtulus and the da Vinci minimally invasive surgical system for any woman needing a hysterectomy. I would also recommend Dr. Kurtulus and his staff for any woman looking for a highly competent Ob/Gyn for annual check-ups. Dr. Kurtulus is a caring and compassionate physician, with exceptional bedside manner and exceptional surgical skills. His office is the epitome of efficiency; scheduling of office visits and hospital surgery is smooth and easy. The office ambiance puts one at ease, especially with the low lighting and modern furnishings. Regarding my own da Vinci robot-assisted hysterectomy, all I can say it that was "a piece of cake"! I was amazed and surprised, after the surgery, to find 4 little Band-Aids on my abdomen, one hidden in my belly button. The pain was minimal to non-existent, as I followed my post-surgery orders. Dr. Kurtulus takes excellent care of his patients and I, for one, am thrilled to be in his care!

– Susan

My wife and I were on our way to North County OBGYN clinic for prenatal visits, and found out about Dr. Kurtulus (whose office is next door) by coincidence. He delivered our baby boy ten days ago, and my wife and I still chat about how lucky we are to meet Dr. Kurtulus. His knowledge, attitude towards his patients and operational skills are simply extraordinary. He made us feel so comfortable throughout the visits and during my wife's c-section, and did a terrific job of following up afterwards. We would strongly recommend him to any potential parents looking for an OB GYN.
